Kiki McDonough has long been a byword for style among jewellery connoisseurs. Now the London designer best known for her brilliant work with coloured gemstones has introduced an elegant signature collection of heirloom pieces for brides
Kiki McDonough has long been a go-to for jewellery aficionados. High-profile fans include the Duchess of Cambridge, who is often seen sporting Kiki’s hoop earrings with detachable drop jewels. So the recent introduction of a special bridal collection is good news indeed – here are beautiful and refined pieces that you’ll want to wear long after your wedding day.
Kiki McDonough has jewellery in her blood – her parents ran a store specialising in antique pieces – but when she started out in 1985 her focus was on designing wearable everyday and occasion pieces featuring glorious and colourful gemstones. While we may be more attuned to ‘fancy’ stones today, back then they were usually seen on inherited jewellery. Kiki’s artful combinations of unusual colours stood out as something really different – modern heirloom-quality pieces in beautiful and wearable settings.
Her mantra – then and now – is that women should collect and wear fine jewellery for themselves, and because they love each individual piece they buy.
Her boutique, located right by Peter Jones in Sloane Square, is a treasure trove of covetable items. While you’ll find men’s cufflinks and other gifts in the mix, the real focus is on fabulous earrings, necklaces and other finery.
Kiki McDonough is strongly influenced by nature, and lovely flower motifs are a recurring theme in her pieces. You will also find truly bold and beautiful colour mixes, since she loves working with choice and unusual stones such as peridot, amethyst, topaz, tourmaline and garnet. Of course, these are stones that our grandmothers knew well – but rarely if ever wore in such glorious and flamboyant combinations.
Bridal pieces to treasure
The new bridal collection has the beautiful settings that feature on all Kiki McDonough pieces, but here the focus is on the classic bridal combination of diamond and pearls. Short on bold colour maybe, but these are generous and achingly beautiful pearls.
The overall look of these pieces is refined and timeless, making them the perfect ‘something new’ on your wedding day.
The new collection is available to order from Kiki McDonough’s Sloane Square boutique. While phone and email enquiries are welcome, do visit the store if you can as it’s the best way to get the measure of Kiki McDonough’s work – just don’t be surprised if you are converted into a lifelong collector of her jewels.
