The new Clara Chatto collection for bridesmaids is just the ticket if you want your supporting crew to look cool, glamorous and timelessly elegant
Clara Chatto may just be salvation for brides looking to dress a group of discerning adult bridesmaids. The new collection, launched in January this year, offers effortlessly elegant silk gowns that are smart enough for a grand function and chic enough for a more pared-back party.
The collection is the brainchild of London-based designer Frances Adam. She hit upon the idea when she was planning outfits for her wedding – and also assisting a friend – and having trouble finding gowns that offered both quality and great fit. She says: “You’re willing to invest in a dress but will it flatter you in all seasons and for years to come? Luxury and disposable fashion do not equate – designing the first collection I constantly asked myself – will this endure?”
What she came up with was a wrap style – flattering to different heights and figures and also a fashion classic. This first collection is pared back, offering mid and longer lengths and either short sleeves or bracelet length (just above the wrist). All gowns are made to order in London, and packaging and labels are also UK-sourced.
We love the gowns for their timeless tea-gown qualities. While they are certainly smart enough for bridesmaid duties, we can also see them being worn again for summer parties and friends’ weddings. Critically, they don’t look to ‘bridsemaidy’, which is something that will certainly meet with the approval of those who don’t do long gowns or don’t want to feel like a prom queen.
The colour palette is limited to five colours for this first collection – ranging from a lovely soft oyster and eau de nil to on-trend oyster (a soft almost lilac) to bold coral red and a luscious shade of midnight blue. Each gown also comes with a waist tie that includes a monogram – you can choose each bridesmaid’s initials or your wedding monogram – a lovely bespoke touch that is also subtle. The collection also includes matching hair ties, also in silk and also with a monogram.
