With a reputation as one of New Zealand’s most exciting wineries, Mahana also offers a stunning honeymoon location with views over Mount Arthur and the Tasman Bay. And its contemporary accommodation and fantastic artworks make this an immersion in contemporary South Island culture
Mahana is a well-regarded winery that takes advantage of the dramatic natural landscape of New Zealand’s South Island. It’s located 100 metres above sea level and overlooking the Tasman Bay and Southern Alps. Its name, Mahana, means warm in the Maori language – and the rolling slopes catch the best of the spring sunshine and cooling see breezes in summer.
If wine’s your thing, then this is a great place to sample New Zealand Pinot (Noir and Gris), as well as some Riesling and Chardonnay. Nearby are two further vineyards on the Waimea Plains. The organic production methods and four-level winery at Mahana offer a sophisticated setting for wine tastings and functions and the property welcomes many wedding couples.
But there is much more to offer on this estate beyond good food and wine. The art gallery hosts eight shows a year from owner Glenn Schaeffer’s private collection, alongside works by contemporary American and Kiwi artists. There are also sculptures and installations dotted throughout the winery grounds.
But the piece de resistance for honeymooners is the fabulous Mahana Villa, a slice of Pacific Modernism featuring four private luxury suites for guests. Formerly the home of Glenn Schaeffer, the villa houses what is reputed to be the largest private art collection on the South Island, and with spectacular views over the landscape from the elegant and light-filled interiors.
Exploring the South Island is easy from Mahana. It’s close to Nelson, one of the oldest South Island settlements and renowned for its lively arts scene. Abel Tasman National Park and Nelson wine country are on the doorstep and the gentle climate means year-round opportunities to swim, sail and fish. It’s also perfect country for horseriding, mountain biking and rock climbing.
