Wedding menus with a difference

Wedding menus with a difference
wedding menu featuring mini cakes and sandwiches makes a moreish alternative to traditional finger food – perfect if you have an early or mid-afternoon reception

From oyster shuckers to sharing platters, think different with this selection of wedding menu ideas from London and Wiltshire-based event caterer Top Hat

Choosing the right wedding menu starts with timing. A lot of weddings happen in the early afternoon, which means guests may be starving by the time they emerge from the service, especially if they’ve had a long journey. Canapés are moreish and a good filler if you’re having a long day – especially when you are serving drinks – but a smart alternative to the more traditional wedding menu options is to combine finger food with afternoon tea, for instance by serving mini bagels and cucumber sandwiches alongside plates of bite-sized doughnuts, macaroons and chocolate éclairs.

Bowl food is great for a more informal event or if you’re including a post-dancing supper. Choose something simple and wholesome

Sharing platters make a good informal alternative to the full three-course plated menu, especially as they encourage people to socialise. They also tend to be easier to serve. Bowl food is another informal option for your wedding menu. Anything easy to eat when you have a glass in hand is welcome, especially if you are serving a supper after dancing. Another alternative to consider is food stalls – a great way to accommodate a second wave of guests or keep things relaxed. A wood fired pizza oven, roving oyster shucker or wok food stall can be entertaining and a great way for people to graze as they mingle.

A wok stall is a novel idea for outdoor weddings, giving people the opportunity to graze while they socialise

Even if you’re serving a sit-down meal as the main event, it’s a good idea to give your guests an opportunity to move around and mingle. Including a pudding station and cheese table is a good way to do this. Both are hard to resist and give people the option to wander up in their own time rather than waiting to be served. Also consider adding them to your menu for a later supper. They will be a surefire hit for the late-night crowd – few people can resist the opportunity to stop and refuel at a table groaning with sweet or savoury treats after partying.
