From bold embellishment and rich colour to elegant high-neck gowns, Clare Thompson of The Wedding Club picks out key bridal fashion trends for 2019 from new-season designer collections

With leading international designers on its books, the buying team at The Wedding Club is well-placed to spot key fashion trends in bridal. Naeem Khan’s stunning new collection includes rich botanical motifs

Bold botanicals

“The trend for intricate textures and 3D effects remains key for 2019,” says Clare Thompson. “And for the season ahead things are going even bolder, with strong botanical and floral designs.” These feature particularly strongly in collections by Naeem Khan and Muse by Berta. Iconic New York designer Carolina Herrera includes a romantic strapless gown with intricate cut-out flower effects in her collection, while Australian designer Steven Khalil – who specialises in classic formal styles with a contemporary edge – has a gown with amazingly intricate 3D trails at neckline and sleeves to create an off-the-shoulder effect.

Marco & Maria has included a standout yellow gown in its new collection

Rich colours

Clare says that colour remains a strong element in many designer collections, and with richer hues in the mix in 2019. Alongside soft blues, pinks and latte/caramel shades, Marco & Maria includes a gown embellished with sunshine yellow flowers, while Naeem Khan and Reem Acra both feature a rich and almost burnished yellow gold. Temperley London’s new bridal collections include both rich Bohemian-style floral motifs and softer pastel appliqué blooms.

Zuhair Murad’s new collection includes intricate Deco detailing on classic day-to-evening gowns

Deco effects

The sparkling embellishments that have become such a feature across bridal gowns and accessories in recent seasons are taking on a Deco flavour for 2019 collections, says Clare: “The Deco element features especially strongly in Zuhair Murad’s new collection, which has intricate graphic beading and crystals, as well as feathered trims”. The Deco effect is also in the line of some dresses – for instance Naeem Khan has a slimline strapless gown with chevron beading and fringing.

Muse by Berta Celeste is a fabulous form-fitting bridal gown with sheer overlay

Sheer drama

Sheer gowns have always been a signature for Berta and Muse by Berta, but are also a key feature in many other designer collections, notably Costarellos and J’Aton. Reem Acra uses sheers with delicate silver appliqué to create ethereal effects on gowns. The collection also has a lovely sheer cape with flower motif and silver detail at the neckline.

Savannah Miller’s elegant high-necked gown with long sleeves has an almost Edwardian flavour

Long sleeves and high necklines

While sheers and plunge necks remain popular, Clare and her buying team have noticed an increasing number of ‘covered up’ styles across the designer collections. “Long sleeves – plain, sheer or textured – are popular, alongside high necklines and decorative effects at the neckline. Costarellos’ collection has some lovely examples, while Muse by Berta’s new collection includes an elegant lace high-neck gown with textured sheer bodice and sleeves. Savannah Miller includes a slimline gown with floral lace overlayer to create a boho style with an almost Edwardian-style neckline.
